Camp Life
Accommodation and food
Campers sleep in rustic cabins, in single or bunk beds. A typical cabin consists of several separate, private entrance rooms containing three beds each. An assigned camp counselor may occupy a cabin. There is one central washroom facility each for males and females, including showers.
Campers and staff are fed the same hearty, nutritious meals. In addition to three meals, an evening snack is served before bedtime. The kitchen staff can prepare special meals on request for those on restricted diets. No products containing peanuts are used in the kitchen. Food is generally not permitted in cabins to avoid attracting rodents.
Staff, supervision, and safety
Staff members consist of a camp director, counselors, medical personnel, a safety officer/lifeguard, leaders in training, a cook and the cook's helpers. Counselors and the safety officer are assigned to supervise groups of students. Should a medical emergency occur, a hospital is located in Richard's Landing, just a five minute drive from the camp.
Typical day
An average day begins with a hearty breakfast at 7:30 a.m., followed by a few chores and then a fully structured morning and afternoon of lessons, theory, choir and ensembles - interspersed with recreation which includes supervised swimming at the nearby Richard’s Landing beach, soccer and crafts. The last night of camp consists of ‘fun night’ in which students are encouraged to entertain their fellow campers with skits and other antics. Evening recitals are followed by a few games or a campfire before retiring for the night. Lights out are at 10:30 p.m. for junior campers (up to 12 years old), and 11:00 p.m. for senior campers.
The full inspiration of the camp becomes apparent when one observes students run from lessons to choir practice, prepare a skit for fun night, meander back to their cabins after a campfire or glow with that special expression after the final concert. AMC campers develop a life-long love of music and an appreciation for the pursuit of excellence.
Recreational time
Recreation includes board games, crafts, supervised swimming, soccer and always several surprises! The camp has a full-time recreation supervisor who is sure to be busy planning some very exciting activities for this season.
Evening recitals
Most evenings students present a recital which features a variety of solo, chamber music, and ensemble performances. Participants at the camp are asked to perform at least once in a recital and friends and family are invited to attend. These recitals begin at 7:00 p.m. and can sometimes last more than one and one half hours.
Final concert
A final concert is held starting at 2:00 p.m. on the last day of camp. Students will deliver ensembles, concerts and some solo performances, many learned during their two week Algoma Music Camp experience. Family members and friends are invited to attend this 2-hour event - an admission fee of $5 per adult and $2 per child under 12 applies.
Faculty concert
Near the end of the two weeks faculty members hold a concert that is also open to family and friends. A repertoire of music and dance is performed to the delight of students and adults alike. An admission fee of $10 per adult and $2 per child is collected from audience members.
